Patients Rights

A meeting of the Support Group was held in April when we heard Christine Hatfield of Buckinghamshire Community Health Council explain about the rights of Patients from the NHS as well as the work of the Community Health Councils (CHC).

The Councils were set up by the government to represent the interests of the public in their local NHS. Their main functions are monitoring (acting as a watchdog for the community), enabling local people to participate in the planning of local services, information resource and helping people to make and follow up complaints. Christine explained the procedure for making complaints, this sparked off a lot of input from those attending as many had had the need to complain and all were not happy about the way in which their case was handled.

We are thankful to Christine for her input. She also provided copies of a number of leaflets that might be useful. They are listed below and available from your local CHC. To find details your local CHC, please contact the Association of Community Health Councils (0207 609 8405)
